La luz natural es fundamental para la vida en el planeta tierra, pues regula los ciclos de la vida humana, animal y vegetal. En el diseño de las ciudades, la luz, como una forma de energía, juega un papel fundamental para el bienestar humano y sus diversas actividades; en relación a sí mismo como en relación a los otros congéneres.

La organización espacial de la arquitectura en escala urbana define condiciones físicas y ambientales que es necesario comprender para controlar, modelar, planificar y diseñar escenarios de un habitar sostenible.
El laboratorio consiste en un espacio académico de investigación multidisciplinaria que tiene por objetivo generar nuevo conocimiento, a partir de evaluaciones energéticas y ambientales de proyectos urbanos o arquitectónicos, en vinculación con su entorno.

El enfoque central es el estudio experimental de la interacción entre morfología urbana y redes de energía; analizando escenarios reales o propuestos de configuraciones espaciales urbanísticas y arquitectónicas. En particular, modelar parámetros relativos a forma urbana, edificabilidad, espacialidad vinculados a flujos de calor, luz, aire, sonido, contaminación, con el fin de prever efectos térmicos, lumínicos, acústicos, etc. en propuestas de diseño urbano.

El objeto final de investigación es el habitar desde la perspectiva del confort y bienestar del ser humano, que se involucre en la participación como comunidad viviente. Para ello, las herramientas de visualización espacial y de evaluaciones energéticas contribuye a una mejor comprensión del medio; cualitativa y cuantitativa y por ende su participación.

Líneas de investigación: Eficiencia Energética Edificatoria, Urbanismo Bioclimático, Modelamiento Espacial Energético, Desarrollo Sostenible, diseño urbano paramétrico . Operacionalmente, se organiza en dos líneas de trabajo: el monitoreo in situ y las simulaciones energéticas informáticas en espacio 3D y 2D. La visualización espacial de estas investigaciones es condición necesaria, pues ello permite una comprensión previa a la toma de decisión de las comunidades usuarias, profesionales, planificadores, y autoridades.

Este laboratorio creado el año 2013, pretende ser un referente nacional e internacional en líneas de investigación que cruzan áreas temáticas disciplinares paralelas: el diseño de la morfología urbana (urbanismo) y la comprensión física de procesos de transferencia de energía. Aborda diferentes escalas de atuación: desde la micro escala (arquitectura- espacio público); la meso escala (ciudad) y la macro escala (territorio) considerando, en esta última, los fenómenos atmosféricos (meteorología-clima).

LUMEN cuenta con recursos de infraestructura, equipos, software e instrumentos de medición, y funciona físicamente en el Edificio A del Departamento de Urbanismo, Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo, Universidad de Chile. Capta recursos humanos de post doctorado y tesistas, quienes contribuyen con los proyectos de investigación, publicaciones y ponencias en el extranjero en torno a una línea investigación de frontera: energía y sostenibilidad urbana. Además, dispone de financiamiento para tesistas, como resultado de los proyectos de investigación adjudicados.

LUMEN corresponde a una metáfora que alude a la luz, como una resultante de la generación de conocimiento e innovación a través de la investigación. Instancia fundamental para mejorar la habitabilidad de los espacios vivibles por el ser humano, en un contexto de sostenibilidad.

Natural light is fundamental to life on planet earth; it regulates the cycles of human, animal, and plant life. In the design of cities light as a means of energy plays a crucial role in human well-being whether in relation to itself and to others.

The spatial organization of architecture at an urban scale defines physical and environmental conditions which need to be understood in order to control, model, plan and design scenarios for sustainable living.

The laboratory consists of academic research whose aim is to generate new knowledge through the energy and environmental assessment of architectural and urban projects linked to their surroundings.

The central focus is the experimental study of the interaction between urban morphology and energy networks by analysing both actual and proposed cases of architectural and urban spatial configurations. This includes; modeling relative parameters of urban form, constructability, Space as associated with flows of heat, light, air, sound, air contamination and sound pollution in order to predict thermal, light, acoustic effects amongst others.

The final objective of the research is our habitat from the perspective of human comfort and well-being which engages itself in our living community. To this end spatial visualization tools and energy assessments are used to contribute to a better understanding both qualitatively and quantitatively and as a result their contribution to the subject.

Research interests include: Energy efficiency in buildings, bioclimatic urbanism, spatial energy modeling, sustainable development and parametric urban design. Operationally these items are organised in two stages which include in-situ monitoring and energy simulations by computer in both two dimensional and three dimensional spaces. The spatial visualisation of the research allows a prior understanding prior to taking decisions by the users, professionals, planners and authorities.

This laboratory, created in the year 2013, aims to become a national and international point of reference in interdisciplinary research which includes: the design of urban morphology (urbanism/town planning) and a physical understanding of energy transfer processes. The laboratory addresses different scales, from the microscale (architecture, public space), the meso-scale (city, microclimate) and the macro scale (territory) which in particular addresses atmospheric phenomena (weather, climate change).

LUMEN has infrastructure, equipment, software, measuring instruments and analytical tools. The Lab is located in Building A in the Department of Urbanism at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism, University of Chile. Human resources comprise of post-doctoral and post-graduate students who contribute at an international level with publications of articles and presentation of papers at conferences on frontier research in energy and urban sustainability. The laboratory also has funding for postgraduate students as the result of research projects awarded.

LUMEN corresponds to a metaphor that refers to light as a result of the generation of knowledge and innovation through research. This is a crucial instance to improve the livability of inhabited space for the human being in the context of sustainability.
